Established in 2015, Food for Thought was born out of an aspiration of the St. Stephen’s Parents’ Association to nourish students in a new way, providing wholesome local food and an education supporting the choices the students make for their health and the environment into the future. The project includes an edible school yard and the incorporation of sustainability throughout the academic curriculum.
Crescentera cocreated the project, and produced the inaugurating fundraiser, an Aperitivo & Auction with parent co-chairs. Honorary chair chef Alice Waters is a prominent supporter of the organic food movement and a recipient of the National Humanities Medal. She is the founder of Chez Panisse, the Chez Panisse Foundation and Edible Schoolyard Project, as well as the Rome Sustainable Food Project at the American Academy in Rome.
The event took place at the historic Casino dell’ Aurora at Palazzo Pallavicini in Rome, Italy and benefited St. Stephen’s International School Rome, an American 501(c)(3).
About Food For Thought
Through an interdisciplinary approach its mission is to:
CREATE and sustain an on-campus edible organic garden that is fully integrated into the curriculum and culture of the school.
NOURISH the school community with healthy, nutritious meals inspired by the garden, Roman culinary traditions and locally sourced food.
INSPIRE the students to lead a healthy lifestyle by understanding the culture, science and impact of their food choices.
The goal is to have a sustainable culture in place at St. Stephen’s by the fall of 2017, reflected in the food that the school grows and serves, the use of the garden as a community teaching space, the curriculum, and the state of the campus.
Through garden-based education and an overall sustainability plan St. Stephen’s will not only reduce its impact on the environment through energy efficient and zero waste practices but its students will graduate with the critical skills to face the current challenges of our planet and society.
