My Story is a unique education outreach program geared towards 4th and 5th grade students in the Escondido Union School District. It was created to support literacy through the arts, to create a love of learning through the creative process, and to reinforce core curriculum while building verbal and written language skills. Over 700 students participate in the program every year in 5 schools.
Fourth graders practice drama and theater techniques to reenact historical events, making the material more accessible and memorable, as well as developing strong speaking and listening skills. The fifth grade classes use digital photography to tell their story and create written narratives that connect photography with their emotions, perspective, and elements of design while sharpening language arts skills. Every year a final performance and exhibition takes place at the Center.
Crescentera was among the first partners of the program in 2006. It supported the first years of growth as well as co-produced a number of the program’s performance and exhibit events.
